BiltongCanada is the North American distributor for African Dawn Rooibos. (Retailers, please visit www.AfricanDawn.us) or www.AfricanDawn.ca
This ‘tea’ is totally pure and natural and has been commercially grown in the Cedarburg region of South Africa for hundreds of years. The Big Five Estate, the growers of African Dawn, has been commercially operating since 1957 and market their superior rooibos under the African Dawn brand name.
Pronounced ‘roy-bos’ meaning red bush in Afrikaans, the language spoken in South Africa where rooibos is grown. The red bush occurs there naturally and the biological; name is - Aspalathus Linearis. This herbal tea or infusion is caffeine free and contains only half the tannin of green tea. Apart from being a tasty, enjoyable beverage that can be drunk instead of tea or coffee, Rooibos contains added benefits because of its high mineral and anti-oxidant content. Rooibos also contains vitamin C- and Alpha hydroxy and can really be considered a nutritional supplement.
The brew is a distinctive red colour and offers a very sweet and slightly nutty flavour.

Rooibos has been experienced as being beneficial in the following exercises: Treatment of asthma, hay fever and eczema; Control of appetite; Restoring the body's equilibrium after strenuous exercise; Easing depression; Easing irritability; Relieving headaches; Easing nervous tension; Fighting insomnia; Relieving stomach cramps and colic in infants. Mothers in South Africa have long been aware of the benefits of giving this drink to babies and children. Further, because Rooibos does not contain oxalic acid, it can be safely consumed by kidney stone sufferers.
Making Rooibos
Preparation is the same as for regular tea. First warm the teapot by rinsing with boiling water. Place one teabag for each cup required into the teapot and cover with boiling water (if you like your tea strong get into the habit of adding one teabag ‘for the pot’). Leave to infuse for several minutes – the longer you leave it the more anti oxidants will be released. Enjoy plain, with hot or cold milk or lemon, sweetened with honey or sugar as you like. I add a couple of ice cubes to mine and enjoy like instant iced tea.
There are numerous articles about Rooibos on the internet that will whet your appetite even more. Remember that generally rooibos tea is sold to a co-op and crops from different farms will be ‘blended’ and then sold to the world market for packaging in different places. African Dawn has complete control of its own product through planting, picking, grading and packing.
